Debitum Naturae means "the debt of nature". A life is spent in repayment to that which brought it forth. The greatest gift we are given doesn't last forever. We are a timeless wonder, brought into time, each of us a mortal moment in an eternal cycle. Our lives are small miracles.
We struggle to accept loss, fear, shifts in culture and politics, in life. But in this struggle, we see a common endeavor begin to emerge. It is not simply a struggle with a specific loss, or for remembrance thereof, but a struggle to bring things of such magnitude into the present. What is the value in this, the purpose? The effect?
It isn't the monument to the loss, or a warning for the present, but a suggestion that really moves us. An idea of where to look or what to see. We are always in a moment between growth and decay. Somewhere between understanding and ignorance. Poetry is in the pursuit, the feeling, grasping, touching finally the understanding of this search for meaning, and of all our losses. Debitum Naturae becomes a reminder: your life belongs to what has come before you and what will come after you. You, just by being here, encompass the biggest moments we have, but made flesh, singular, and finite.
